Hi, I'm Clarice!
I’m an illustrator and writer, interested in creating it all—from picture books and board books to chapter books and graphic novels.
I graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute with a BFA in Animation in 2011, and shortly after, I moved to Japan. I spent over a decade there, falling in love with the food, adventures with my children, and my little studio in Sakamoto, at the base of Mount Hiei. I also came to cherish the small, almost-missed moments that tend to stick with you the longest.
My stories celebrate friendship, curiosity, and the slightly odd corners of everyday life. I enjoy diving into research for projects—even if it just starts with a small question and spirals into something delightfully weird.
I adore all creatures, but I have a strict look-don’t-touch rule for insects—sorry, buggies! Kabuto-mushi are the delightful exception.
I’m drawn to stories that are a little quirky, a little heartfelt, and occasionally a bit spooky.
When I’m not working, I’m usually staying active, getting curious, or stepping on Legos.
